[public-sector-wg] Call THIS FRIDAY - FLEET Management on blockchain - UN
Karen Ottoni
Hi Social Impact WG,
I wanted to share with you two sessions coming up at our Hyperledger Global Forum that may be interesting to this group and you can see the discussion that the Public Sector WG is having on potential questions below: 2. Group input - Questions for Panelists at Hyperledger Global Forum We have two Public Sector themed panels presenting at the Global Forum in Basel this December. Let's develop a list of possible questions for discussion, so that we can be sure that the presentations reflect the knowledge and interests of our group. (This and #3 were on last call's agenda, but we went right up to time with the presentation, so have forwarded these agenda points.) Hyperledger and the Global South Countries around the world struggle with canker of patronage political culture, political party supporters are rewarded with contracts to build roads, schools, hospitals. In the vein of recouping 'expenses', these contractors cut costs. The result is a case of poorly constructed roads, inadequate facilities and the consequent deaths in hospitals, dysfunctional school systems and numerous road accidents. Global South is really pioneering in extended use of enterprise grade blockchain solutions in governmental processes to promote transparency and accountability. From integration of Brazilian banks to maximize identification of banknote exchange opportunities, to coffee trading in Africa there is no limit to Blockchain innovation. Metropolis as the World Association of Large Metropolis has 138 member metropolitan regions around 5 continents. Out of them 69 are already using the technology in 255 projects! Lets discuss how Global South utilizes Blockchain, strategic guidelines for the development of DLT applications to solve particular urban issues of citizenship and democracy, land and real estate markets, infrastructure and public services, exchanges of total values -financial and non financial-, governance and finance Panel: Citizens and Blockchain Blockchain brings an opportunity for improvement of efficiency, industry creation and allows the innovators to become global leaders in the space. But what are the challenges of governments implementing large scale blockchain projects for improved citizen relations? Attendees will gain insights into how public sector looks at decentralized identity and and the future of distributed ledgers. We will hear about the main obstacles people in latin american countries usually have to surpass when trying to develop software using cutting-edge technologies as well as the benefits these communities have brought to marginalized sectors of the country. We will also have a unique opportunity to discuss the Smart Dubai initiative and it has been improving citizen stories to reach the goal of having everything on a blockchain by 2020. Can we create Citizens-as-a-Service? Saudi Arabia archives a National Census on a Permissionless Blockchain Best, Karen ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Rose Shuman <rose@...> Date: Thursday, October 11, 2018 Subject: [public-sector-wg] Call THIS FRIDAY - FLEET Management on blockchain - UN To: public-sector-wg@... Dear all, Thanks to everyone who joined our very engaging call with Iulian Circo from Proof of Impact. Encourage those who missed the call to have a listen or review the transcripts at the Public Sector Wiki Page. We are looking forward to another innovative and breakthrough implementation, this Friday, October 12th - Calendar Link - with UN Development Programme Moldova sharing their experience putting the UN fleet on blockchain to co-manage resources. Time is 10am US Eastern Time. Add it to your calendar to find out your local time. 1. UN Moldova - Fleet Management via Blockchain There has been so much deliberation recently about “blockchain” and its rapid spread, that it would have been tedious for the development sector to sit and observe on the side-line. In 2016, MiLab together with UNDP Moldova Country Office, questioned itself whether blockchain technology can help make a more efficient and user-friendly fleet management for local UN agencies and projects, making proper use of all the cars that UN staff uses to conduct its daily business. Needless to say, existing informal systems, although dealing with a plain issue like booking a car or a driver, has pointed out sufficient pain points: personal calls, networking and unclear time needed to spend on schedule checking, causality affecting the fact that information isn’t accessible to all equally and data on transportation requests aren’t recorded and used as alternative data flows. The UN fleet management system is tested via desktop and mobile applications, three major stages of a transportation requests being logged on blockchain: upon creation, acceptance and completion of every request initiated in the system. Although still in its piloting phase, this experiment aims to save time and reduce the hassle of booking a car, diminish transactional costs, enhance transparency and availability of data.

Working Group Connect - 10/31 @ 12pm ET?
Hi all,
I hope everyone is doing well? Apologies for the delay in scheduling the next working group meeting. Ric and I have both been traveling. Curious if we can make a Halloween connect work this week on Wednesday, October 31 at 12pm ET?
Please reply yes or no to this email. If we have a quorum, we’ll request a zoom meeting invite. If this time is not convenient for most, I’ll send out a doodle poll to find an alternative.
Thanks so much,
Alissa

We have one here at Zeva that we developed for Save the Children US, but it is still in development phase. We are delivery a pilot by the end of this year. Does that work with you?
I still have to ask the customer (Save) if they are okay with sharing the information.

Final Decision on WGs Governing Structure and Naming - Social Impact
Hi All, The Hyperledger team has informed us that, effective immediately, all Hyperledger Sector Working Groups (WGs), have been renamed to Sector Special Interest Groups (SIGs.) Also, all SIGs will now fall under the Hyperledger Governing Board and Hyperledger staff instead of the Hyperledger Technical Steering Committee (TSC). So going forward the Social Impact Working Group will be named the Social Impact Special Interest Group. Some of you may have followed via the TSC the discussions about the change in the governance structure of the working groups, at the same time the recommendation to rename them to Special Interest Groups (SIGs) was made to be consistent with the terminology that is common in other consortia and to also differentiate them from the more technical-focused working groups at Hyperledger that report into the TSC. SIGs tend to be business-focused and pull in practitioners from a given domain to share and discuss what they are building, whereas a WG is technical focused and not tied to a specific sector. The anticipation is that the work products of the SIGs will continue to be diverse based on each SIG's focus and will continue to be driven by the members of the SIGs and their work products can also lead to new Hyperledger Labs or projects as proposed by the needs of the SIGs. Each SIG will have an assigned Hyperledger Staff member who will work closely with the SIG Chair, and we are thrilled that the brilliant Karen Ottoni will be the point of contact for the Social Impact SIG. Here are the updated links to our materials, which you can also always find on the wiki page:
We look forward to furthering the agendas of the Social Impact Special Interest Group and your continuous support. Watch for a doodle request to determine the best days for our regular connect – and then keep an eye out for our next meeting to be announced shortly! Thanks so much, Alissa

Re: Examples of successful blockchain projects
Stephen Chiu
Karen et al,
May I ask who or what the background for the inquiry? I was thinking that our group should compile that list of demonstrated blockchain projects... done both by our respective orgs, but also a review of all other/external blockchain projects done by others. Ideally our first collaborative project, if it hasnt started already. WV has two blockchain projects underway w results. Sikka based in Nepal and Kartuan Bele based in Timor Leste. Btw, if anyone is going to the Blockchain Humanitarian Summit in NY later this week, our Sikka lead will be available to share more in person. And if anyone is going to the Hyperledger GF in Basel next week, our Kartuan Bele lead will be there and available to share more in person. Just let me know and I can connect. Finally, please do share other Blockchain events that might be relevant to our group. One of my WV colleagues from DC sent me this, but it seems more academic and government-focused. https://digitalchamber.org/dc-blockchain-summit-2019/ Warm regards, Steve Majd, I would love to learn more about the Save project if/when you have time to present. Re: Examples of successful blockchain projects

Hi Stephen, It's a press inquiry that is planning to release an article talking about blockchain project progress/lack thereof in international development. I'll see if I can find links to more information that details the success of those projects you mention. If you have any handy please share, as I need it by 5pm today. Adding a tracker for projects is definitely something I would love for this group to work on, though I know it's being done in a few places. Perhaps we can connect with the Public Sector SIG on this because they have this tracker: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14BPQIqnDUTyinkp9eJ7bwYwsg22RJz0AVU9vOSSU94o/edit#gid=1835238919 I will be at the Humanitarian Blockchain Summit. It will be great to meet your Sikka lead there, please connect us (and add him/her to this group!). Same for Kartuan Bele. Thanks! Digital Chamber of Commerce is part of Hyperledger and they do great events, I encourage anyone to attend their summit, but yes they are specifically focused on US government and policy for the most part.
