DCI Goals for Global Forum - Seeking your input!

Karen Ottoni

Dear Community,

Following up on our conversation last Friday on how we can incorporate DCI into Hyperledger Global Forum, I would like to source ideas for goals we can establish and activities/content from this community. Please look at our figures from last year below, I've set up a wiki page to capture but feel free to just reply here and I'll add it in! We can discuss what we have come up with on our next call on April 2nd.
  1. DCI goals for the event that we can measure ourselves against. You can review here some ideas we had for 2020, we did the happy hour trivia, community talk with Tracy and Swetha, and promoted "all are welcome here". Anything else?
  • Submit a session on the agenda to highlight DCI WG and individuals in the community--Lindsay
  • Diversity in attendance (see more info on this page for the event)
    • 2020: 80% male, 18% female, .08% non-binary
    • 2021 goal?
  • Diversity in speakers
    • 2020: 75% male, 17% female
    • 2021 goal?
  • Geographic representation
    • 2020: 6 continents
      • 2021 goal?
    • 2020: 37 countries
      • 2021 goal?
  • Other DCI goals?
  • Inclusion of ADA tools
    • Update: we have a sponsor for closed captioning and translation!
  • Create a guide for DCI event practices

Thanks,
Karen

Hi Karen - thanks for pulling this together.

A handful of suggestions:

  1. DCI goals for the event that we can measure ourselves against. You can review here some ideas we had for 2020, we did the happy hour trivia, community talk with Tracy and Swetha, and promoted "all are welcome here". Anything else?
  • Submitting a session on the agenda to highlight DCI WG and individuals in the community
    • A great idea. Perhaps the session could start at what is likely to be the general level of understanding around DCI - perhaps 'Why DCI', or 'Forget PoW vs PoS - both should be DCI' or similar. In terms of a theme for the session, perhaps an explanation of why DCI is a cornerstone of the open source approach (utilising as many and as diverse a range of brains and experiences as possible, in order to generate innovation and effective problem-solving) could work.

  • Gender diversity in attendance (see more info on this page for the event)
    • 2020: 80% male, 18% female, .08% non-binary
    • 2021 goal?
      • How about a 25% female attendees goal for 2021 (which I guess would have to be accompanied by all member communications foregrounding that target and encouraging member organisations to consider their contribution toward that target.
      • How about flagging that 'minimum 20% female delegate target in the registration forms - and obliging delegations to physically declare (on the form) the gender breakdown of their delegation? Although those figures will be collated centrally anyway, it cant hurt to have delegations consciously thinking about the makeup of their delegations.
      • I imagine we should also set some 'ultimate' goals for gender-based participation. It strikes me that ultimately, we should strike for an equal male/female split, but I'm not up to date on current thinking around what a representative percentage figure for those identifying as non-binary is. Whatever it is, I think that figures that point to an 'ultimate vision' for gender-based participation cant hurt, though the question of the timescale for achieving it is a sticky problem...
  • Gender diversity in speakers
    • 2020: 75% male, 17% female
    • 2021 goal?
      • Broadly speaking, I think the points I've made above are at least as achievable for speakers - though the organisers are actually able to exert a fair amount of control over the makeup of speakers. I think it could actually be possible to enforce a 'one-third female' rule.
  • Ethnic diversity in attendees and speakers.
    • This issue doesn't seem to have been considered. I've not had sight of up-to-date figures which might give an idea of what reasonable short-term or 'ultimate' target might be but this isn't an area we can simply not address.
  • Geographic representation
    • 2020: 6 continents
      • 2021 goal?
    • 2020: 37 countries
      • 2021 goal?
        • I think the ongoing target simply has to be continuous improvement, doesn't it? Those closer to progress with Hyperledger membership are obviously best placed to make a judgement call on what reasonable increase might be, but i think we'd be missing a trick if we didn't seek to qualitatively improve geographical diversity by setting figures for increasing participation from developing countries.
  • Other DCI goals?
  • Inclusion of ADA tools
    • Update: we have a sponsor for closed captioning and translation!
  • Create a guide for DCI event practices
    • Another great idea - my partner produced something similar for Oxford University, which I'm happy to share if it might be useful.

Hope that's useful.

All the best,

Rod

Hi Rod!

Great to hear from you, I'll bring up your suggestions on our call today. It would be great if you could share the guide for event practices that your partner put together.

Thanks,
Karen
